About the film
The Freedom of the Sea is a personal documentary featuring a family’s journey from Iran to Brighton after the 1970s revolution. Through intimate interviews, they reflect on the difficult decision to leave their home and how swimming in the sea together symbolizes the freedom and new life they found in the UK.

About the filmmaker
Rosie Merat-Brandwood (*2009), from Brighton is a student at Varndean Collage in the UK. Freedom of the sea was her first independent documentary based on her family’s experiences leaving Iran.
