Friction is an experimental documentary exploring the struggles of a closeted trans woman in mainland China. To protect her identity, AI-generated images are used, challenging the hetero-cis gaze. Through visual experimentation, the film reflects on societal segregation, family pressure, gender dysphoria, and resilience, capturing the quest for authenticity and safety.

About the filmmaker
Xiona Li (*1999) is a Chinese trans-feminine filmmaker studying at University of the Arts London. Her work explores identity and gender through film, using 3D design, AI imagery, and intersectional themes.
